Full Service Quilt Shop

Hello Everyone,

 

In Between Stitches has always been your "Full Service Quilting Station" and now we have proof positive!  Leslie, switched out the shop's window display this week and, as always, the windows stop foot traffic on the sidewalks of downtown Livermore.

 

Every September The Altamont Cruisers have a huge car show in downtown Livermore.  Leslie turned one window into an old-fashioned filling station to tie in to the events downtown.

Joyce, one of the shop's talented customers, just finished her Vintage Tin quilt by Crabapple Hill, and what an absolutely perfect quilt to be on display.

Great attention to detail in each and every block.

The other front window has my Harvest of Hope quilt on display.  As this quilt was being born, Leslie asked if it would be ready in time for Fall.....and it was!

Mr. Joe did a great job taking pictures through the windows.  I don't know how he managed to capture all of the colors without getting reflections.  What a guy!

Fall has arrived at the shop harvesting creativity, a sense of community, and friendships.
 

 

Come on down to the shop, we won't clean your windows on your car but we can fill up your "quilting tank" with endless possibilities.  We will charge up your quilting battery and offer roadside assistance along your quilting journey.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

 

Hello Everyone,

 

So this is what I've been doing over the past few days, making quilt blocks, quilt blocks, and more quilt blocks on my computer for my Patchwork Math Reference Manual for my class during Quilting in the Garden at Alden Lane Nursery and at In Between Stitches on Oct. 15th and Nov. 19th.  Click HERE for a link to the class schedule.

 



I've assembled thirty pages of how-to instructions and resizing formulas to make quilting components to assemble 12 blocks.......and this is just the beginning......I'm only limited by my imagination.  My imagination is kicking into overdrive!  My next trick is to make a sampler quilt with all of the blocks from the book. 

This binder if full of "step-outs" which are all of the components broken down into the different assembly steps that I use for demonstration in each step of the quilting process.  I know all people have a different approach to learning, so I make sure everyone has the instructions in their hand, and I then demonstrate the process.  Since this class is pretty technical, I'm creating a PowerPoint slide show that I will set up in the corner for students to review the process.

 

 

For a square in a square, I show how to cut your corners like this when using strips.....

 



CORRECT

 

Not like this, because you would end up with stripes going in different directions which is not a good mix if you like having your stripes all going in the same direction.

WRONG!!

 

A corner trimmer tool is a necessity as far as I'm concerned.  It makes my quilting much more accurate.



 

 When you stitch a triangle to a square, you cut the corners off at a 90 degree angle.

 

 

 

Perfect!

The corners of the opposing side triangles are cut at a 45 degree angle, and again, you get a perfect fit.

 

Here are just a few more of the 12 quilting components in the reference manual.

I've also been folding applique sheets into cute little bundles for my Harvest of Hope  pattern.  The quilt is hanging in the front window of the shop surrounded by bundles of hay, pumpkins and a red barn door!  Leslie's creativity with the front window display in phenomenal!  I'll try to take a picture of the front windows and post it. 

I'm getting tons of patterns stuffed for the upcoming quilt shows in Georgetown, Quilting in the Garden, and Pacific International Quilt Festival.

So there you have it.  I'll probably be pretty quiet online for the next week or so.  Both my printer and I are working overtime......so is Mr. Joe.  He's taken the lead in preparing the house and the cabin for Quilt Sue's visit.  My gosh, he's taking his duties very seriously.  I swear he thinks the Queen of England is coming for a visit.  I'm not going to tell him otherwise and just let him continue on with his chores.  There is always a certain amount of work that needs to be completed at the cabin before winter.  He's on an accelerated program and started staining the decks and railings early this year.  Sue, I think you need to come for a visit more often!

Country Charmer Check-In

Hello Everyone,

It's the first of the month again which means it's Country Charmer time.  When you click on the Country Charmer button, it will take you to Lesley's page and the Country Charmer Quiltalong information.  I have Lesley's beautiful quilt at my house and I'll be quilting it for her next month just in time for the parade of quilts.

At the top of my blog, I have the Country Charmer Quiltalong tab HERE where you can get tips on how to select your fabrics, and how the block goes together using the block layout sheet.

Here's my original quilt using red and green fabrics.

This sled comes in handy for display.

 

Here's a parade of blocks to get those juices flowing for colors combinations.  Stripes, polka dots, checks, and plaids, you name it, they all work together.  If you notice, the first two blocks have the neutral color around the center square.

All of the rest of the blocks have an additional color added around the center square.  It's all about the color!
