The Quilt Divas - or - The Power of 15

 

Hello Everyone,

 

The Needle Nellies from Georgetown are indeed Quilt Diva's.  You girls rock!  I titled this post The Power of 15 because the guild has only 15 members.  Fifteen very talented, organized, fun-loving, dynamic ladies that know how to put on a quilt show.  This group of 15 women made 77 quilts for this show. Seventy-seven quilts!

 



 

My association with the guild started when they made my Party in the Garden design for their 2012 opportunity quilt to raise money for the Georgetown Fire Department.  Their version of the quilt was incredible!  Gail and I marvelled at the fabric selection, to the exquisite construction to the quilting.  It truly deserved all of the ribbons that it received prior to the show from County Fairs and other quilt shows.

The Georgetown guild began in 1997.  To date, they have raised and donated $34,900 to the  fire department.  They are the main support for the GFD's training center. 

The Georgetown quilt guild is like a well-oiled engine.....just like the engine in this old Studebaker fire truck.  They had a job to do to get their show together on the morning of the 15th, and it all came together beautifully, and in short order.  Gentlemen and gentlewomen, start your engines and let the quilt show begin!

Poles went up, quilts were hung, tables and chairs were strategically placed, and a quilt show was soon in the making. 

A nice breeze blew through the park gently making the quilts sway.  I felt as though the quilts were waving at me.

I took lots of pictures, and I know I'm probably leaving some of the Nellies out.....I'm sorry if I did and I apologize in advance.  Don't give up on me, I'm posting another round of pictures tomorrow.

The Nellies have an applique sub group.  They collectively decide on a project, and all make the same quilt.  This is Verna Mosquera's Faded Glory pattern from The Vintage Spool.  Or as Carole said, "Not so faded glory." Carole loves bright colors.

The next grouping of photos are the Fire Chief's choice from previous years.

I've finally stopped levitating like a magician's assistant.  I'm back on earth from Cloud 9.  Back to work at the shop, teaching quilting, laundry, cleaning and all the normal chores that I've let slip over the past month.  Mr. Joe has been picking up the slack and is ready to return to his woodworking shop, take off his apron and replace it with his tool belt.

The Georgetown Show - Part 2

Hello Everyone,

Today I will show pictures of my area at the Georgetown show.  Tomorrow I will post all of the pictures that I took of the quilts made by the Needle Nellies.

Here's one half of my booth right after we finished setting up. I could have used one of those panoramic cameras to get a good view of the inside of the kiosk.

I had fourteen quilts displayed around the inside of the kiosk.  I've never had the opportunity to view all of my quilts hanging together in one spot.  A real first.  I actually climbed up on the play structure to get this picture.

October Magic was right on the table so people could really see all of the details, from the witches' feet under the house, to the ghost coming out of the chimney,

I took up two of my toolboxes and used them to display layer cakes and fat quarters.

Mr. Joe came up with the idea to use this little lattice work to display patterns.  Throughout the day, Gail and I kept restocking.....now that was fun trying to stay on top of that!

I took as many pictures as I could while we were setting up.  Once the show started at 10am, forget it.....we never left our chairs.  We had a line purchasing my patterns and quilting supplies.

We were lucky to have Patty, the owner of Cabin Fever Quilt Designs, as our kiosk mate.  Patty makes and sells beautiful hand-dyed wool and silk. The colors were incredible!

Thank you again to all of the Needle Nellies for inviting me to your show.  Gail and I have many happy memories of the time we spent with you in your lovely, little town.

I'm off to the shop today to teach October Magic.  What was I thinking, scheduling a class so soon after the show???  The girls are going to have to keep me on my toes!

P.S.S. A triple shout out to Nancy and her family that came to the show from Idaho!  They were on their way to California to see their daughter in Sacramento, and took a detour to Georgetown.  It is so much fun to meet the people that read my blog.  Now I can put faces to comments and emails.

The 3rd Saturday in September - Georgetown

Hello Everyone,

 

Pull up a chair, preferably a red and blue plaid chair, pour another cup of coffee and enjoy my tale about my weekend that I will remember with great fondness at the Needle Nellies quilt show in Georgetown, on the 3rd Saturday in September.

Bright and early last Friday morning, my sister Gail and I headed off to Georgetown.

We couldn't have packed another item into the Jeep.  Well we could have, but I wouldn't have been able to see out the back window.  I like to see where I've been just as much as where I'm going.

Our destination was the American River Inn, about a three-hour ride from my home in the San Francisco Bay Area, across the great Sacramento Valley to the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.  (Note to self:  Remind Gail to take car sick pills prior to departure). The 6 miles of highway 49 outside of Auburn are wee bit windy!

Sanitarium?  We fit right in!  I know I've been forgetting things lately, but checking myself into a sanitarium is a bit premature.

Innkeeper Betty and her little black dog checked us in to our room in this wonderful, historic building.

We spent some time on the peaceful deck after we arrived.  (Note to self:  Next time try not to fall asleep on the deck and wake myself up with snoring reverberating off the back of the building).

Here is our room, #11, right off the main salon.  That's salon, not saloon.  I'll bet this room has seen some rip roaring times over the past 150 years!

Feather beds and a quilt.  What could be better for two quilters?

Now this is handy.  Our door is on the left, our bathroom door is on the right.  We could stop by the fridge for a midnight snack on the way to the loo.

I guess I could have weighed myself "dripping" wet.  This fabulous scale was right next to the claw foot tub.  Yes, that is a log cabin quilt shower curtain.

 

 

Here's a picture of the dining room.  Everything about the American River Inn was wonderful.  I highly recommend it.  I want to go back, stay at the inn, explore the area, learn more about Georgetown's rich history and visit all my new quilty friends.

Around 5:30pm, Needle Nellie Candy picked us up in the salon....not saloon.  She greeted us with a big smile and a hug.....instant friends.  We both felt like we had known her forever. 

Candy was our chauffeur to Camp Virner, a wonderful German, American & Italian restaurant seven miles out of town.  A very picturesque drive too.

Here are some of the Needle Nellies.  The MOST delightful, wonderful, and talented group of women you would ever want to know.  From left to right; Marina, Lynn. Mary Ellen, Abbey, Gail, Candy, Me, Carole and Mary.  Both Gail and I felt and instant bond with our new friends.  They really know how to extend a warm welcome. 

When in Rome, order the Wiener Schnitzel!  Oh my gosh, my plate was full and it was so good!  We enjoyed our dinner, our conversation and companionship immensely.  We so appreciated the time the ladies spent with us the night before their big show.

Part Two tomorrow.  In a nutshell, my calendar is already marked for the 3rd Saturday in September 2013.  I wouldn't miss an opportunity to go to the Needle Nellies show.  The fifteen Nellies really know how to host a quilt show!
