Country Sunshine Photo Shoot

Hello Everyone,

 

She's finished!  We popped the cork on a bottle of wine last night and toasted Country Sunshine.  It was a beautiful day here in the mountains for an outing to visit two of our favorite wineries and take photos.

 

 

Our first stop was Indian Rock Vineyards on Pennsylvania Gulch Road in Murphys, CA. We always bring company here for a picnic at the lake. I knew weeks ago that I wanted to have a picture of the quilt on the windmill.  Just look at that sky!  It was like Spring yesterday and not February.

 



 

The goose came over to check out my flying geese in the quilt.....of which there are many.

 

Our second stop was Ayrael Vieux Vineyard on Monge Ranch Road in Douglas Flat, CA.

This little out building is perfect for a picnic lunch and a glass of wine.  Mazie made herself right at home.  This area was very cozy when we went there on a chilly day last month.

 

 

This was taken inside the tasting room.  Perfect match with the walls and bench.

 

Today I have to sort through all of the photos and select one for the front cover of the pattern.  This is always an issue.  I want to show the whole quilt, but I want to be artsy at the same time.  A collage maybe?

 

I'm off to my Independence Hall Quilt Guild Meeting this morning.  I'm going to take Country Sunshine for show and tell.  Then this afternoon it's work, work, work on the pattern front and back covers.  Then it's print, print, print.  This pattern will be available on my Sew'n Wild Oaks Designs page on Etsy this week.  I'll keep you posted when it's out there in the marketplace.

 

Thursday I leave for Folsom and get set up for the 3-day quilt show.  This week has all the earmarks of a busy one.  I need a nap just thinking about the days ahead, and what I have to do for the show.  Maybe it's time to pop another cork and just sit back and enjoy the view.

Patchwork Math Class Was In Session

Hello Everyone,

 

My girls in Colusa are creative!  I taught a Patchwork Math class last week at Friends Around the Block, and they taught me a few tricks or two!  I always learn something from my students and write down their excellent ideas and suggestions.

 

This block highlights the Y-square which is in my Patchwork Math book.

 

This block highlights the placement of flying geese and double flying geese.

The next three pictures highlight the versatility of the Y-square to make borders or sashings.

It's all in the use of color and placement.

The girls also made HST 8 at a time and square in a square components.

Pretty block.

Look how you can change the block when you add Y-squares around it.  The girls each made 8 Y-squares during class.

Here's another great border or sashing idea using flying geese and double flying geese.

The girls all made the same components during class using different fabrics.  The possibilities are endless.  I missed a few photo opportunities.  Sorry girls.

All of the formulas for the above components and more are available in my Patchwork Math book which is in my Etsy shop HERE.  This is my most popular workshop and is so much fun to teach.  There are many "light bulb" moments in class and it's so much fun for me to watch the magic happen.  During the workshop, I explain the formulas for one component, then the quilters make that component.  Every hour on the hour, I introduce another formula for a different component.  It is a full day of learning, sharing, and "ah ha" moments.  Throw in a bit a laughter and you have the makings for a great day!

Heritage Class Was In Session

Hello Everyone,

 

An absolutely delightful group of women gathered together at Friends Around the Block in Colusa last Saturday for my Heritage class.  By the end of class, the girls had some beautiful blocks completed.  I can't wait to go back and see everyone again.

 

The magic begins when the pieces are placed on the block layout sheet which is included in each pattern.  (Unless my pattern stuffer, Mr. Joe, forgets to put one in!)

 

The dynamic mother-daughter duo went to town on their blocks. I love seeing this quilt made in blue!

 



Sharon has an eye for detail in her log cabin blocks.  Working with directional fabrics in a Log Cabin block on point, can be a bit tricky.

 



All of the blocks were so different and so beautiful!

 

 

Here are my scrappy blocks that I made before class.  My new version is going to look so different from the original.  I find that when I make my patterns in an alternative colorway, the pattern has a longer shelf life......especially if I make a scrappy version.  I may, just may, have to tear myself away from my quilt show preparations and make one more block today.  I find them so addictive, that I can't make just one!

During class, Mary showed us a quilt top she just completed.  This quilt uses Rachael Remembered fabrics.  Love the quilt, the fabrics, and her precision.

 



Gail and I had a delightful time at Friends Around the Block in Colusa.  Let me tell all of you that this shop is well worth a road trip.  The shop is packed full of goodies and fabrics that I haven't seen in other shops.  Carol, the owner, and the staff are just delightful.  (Note to self.......when we go back to Colusa during duck hunting season, I must remember to pack my camouflage outfit.....especially if we go back to Rocco's on the River for their delicious fish tacos!)
