The Beat of a Different Drummer

Hello Everyone,

 

Yesterday was my Toyland Tree class at In Between Stitches.  The girls got farther along on their Panda than I got on mine.

 

 

All of them have added something "special" to their little bears.

Once the eyes, nose and mouth are applied, they just seemed to come to life.

Each of the bears were in all stages of completion.

I'm going to add the candy cane drumsticks to my little guy too! 

It was fun going around the room looking the uniqueness of the little characters.

There are going to be some wonderful quilts coming out of this class just in time for Christmas.

I had to throw in a couple pictures of some Marionettes.  Just too cute not to show them!

I love the bow!

I'm off to the shop this morning to see what mischief I can get into.  I was too busy yesterday to check out the new fabrics.  There is always something new in store at the store!

Butterscotch Baskets Class is in Session

Hello Everyone,

 

I've been asleep at the switch and forgot to post the pictures from my Butterscotch Baskets class that I taught almost two weeks ago! 

 

Susan is making a beautiful pink, green and black version of the quilt for her daughter.  This is going to be so pretty!

 

My sister Gail, is almost ready to start sewing her blocks together.  Her pinwheels are finished, her baskets blocks are finished......

She's down to the last ten blocks.....I think.

Laurie has been having a good time making her little baskets.  What a great green fabric in her star.

Peg has most of her star blocks finished.  She came into the shop the other day and said she miscounted.  She needs to make 18 more of them!  By now, she can whip them up in no time at all.

Barbara missed the first class, but she quickly got caught up and made her first two pretty blocks.

Kate is making Sallie's quilt by Bonnie Blue.  The blocks are very similar, so I put her into this class.  We picked out her red for the setting blocks and squares.  It's going to be beautiful.  Kate has all of her star blocks finished.  Now she's making the easy, setting squares.

I apologize to all of you girls for not posting your 15 minutes of fame sooner!  By now, your quilts are probably finished!

Quilters' Paradise

Hello Everyone,

 

This has been my week to move my quilts around the quilt shop circuit.  On Tuesday, Mr. Joe, Zinnie, and I headed to Clovis to drop off quilts and patterns to Quilters' Paradise.  When I walked in the door, the first thing I saw was Pick Four by my blogging buddy Quilt Sue!  Two years ago, Sue asked me to review her book and my review is HERE.

 

 

The shop is located in an old bank in the quaint, old town area of Clovis.  There's lots of good lighting and wonderful displays around the shop.  There's a large classroom located at the back of the shop.

 



 What quilt shop doesn't have a baby buggy displayed next to the ceiling??

There was a wonderful selection of wool too.

When you go to Clovis, you not only have the opportunity to shop at a wonderful quilt store, you can also wander up and down the streets in the center of Old Town and go from one antique store to another.  Quilters' Paradise is now displaying Butterscotch Baskets and October Magic for the upcoming Heart of the Valley Shop Hop next week.  It looks like it's going to be a great shop hop.

Only a little quilting has come out of my sewing room this week.  I'll post the results of my progress on the new Toyland Tree in the next couple of days.

Kits Available

Hello Everyone,

I guess you could say I'm on Spring Break.....no quilting.....not much blogging......just getting everything organized and put back together after the quilt show.

I wanted to let you know that there are a few kits left from the show.  I had a couple of Country Charmer kits that are available HERE.  The kits aren't identical to my quilt, but I selected the fabrics to have the same look and feel as my quilt.  (The sashing and black border fabrics are identical.)

 

 

There were also some kits left that are identical to the fabrics I used in For the Love of Baskets available HERE.

The kits make the 120 baskets.  It does not include the fabric for the setting squares, triangles or borders.  The baskets are every color of the rainbow, and you can select your own border fabrics that match your home.

Here's just a sample of the 10 fabric packs for the baskets.

 

This kit is also available in a 30's colorway.  I would love to make this from that pack of fabrics.....I just need more time in my day!

 

We are home with a sick little granddaughter today.  I think she is feeling well enough to spend the afternoon in my sewing room with me.  I'm sure I can find something to keep her occupied and happy in my happy space!

Custom Quilt Lables...You Asked For It

Hello Everyone,

 

Recently, I was asked by a reader to make a tutorial on how I make labels for my quilts.  Some of you are probably old enough to remember the TV show "You Asked For It,"  hosted by Jack Smith in the 1950's.  "Whatever it is, wherever it is, at home or around the world, you see it here, YOU ASKED FOR IT. And here's your hostess, Lynn Wilder."

 

First of all I scour the Internet looking for vintage images with the same coloring, look and feel of the quilt for which I'm making the label.  I save the image with a right-mouse click, select SAVE PICTURE AS, to my computer and then print it on Printed Treasures fabric.  I use the highest quality setting on my inkjet printer and the colors always come out crisp and clear.

Next, trim the image a consistent 1/4" around the entire image.

Carefully peel the backing paper away from the image.  This is the hardest part of the whole procedure.

I always save the leftover binding to attach my labels to the quilt.

I cut the sides 1-1/2" x the length of the image, and stitch them on first.

Then I cut the top and bottom borders which are also 1-1/2" x the width of the label with the sides attached.  Always press the seams in the direction of the borders.

Place the label on top of a plain backing fabric, right sides together.  Using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim around the entire label.

Pin the two pieces together and stitch 1/4" around the entire perimeter of the label.

Then trim off the four corners to reduce bulk.  Carefully, make a small slit in the backing fabric, and turn the whole thing right side out and use one of those "little pointy thingies" to poke out the corners and make them square.

Press, and you have a perfect label.

The last step is stitching in the ditch between the border and the printed label with matching thread. Then, using silk thread which just melts into the fabric, attach the label to the quilt with a blindstitch.

That label went on this quilt, Butterscotch Baskets.

 

It is on the back of this corner.  You have to trust me on this one since I forgot to take a picture of the finished label before this quilt went to it's new, temporary home.
