Three Events

 Hello Everyone,

I'll be at three events this week, so I've been busy preparing for them.  First up is a lecture for the Golden Valley Quilt Guild at St. Marks Lutheran Church 7869 Kingswood Dr. Citrus Heights, Ca. tomorrow night.

Friday night, I'll be at Sew Katie Jean quilt shop in Lincoln, CA.  I will be talking about the inspiration behind my Bridle Path quilt and showing a few tips and tricks for making the quilt.  That event starts at 5:30. You can see the sign-up details on their website.

Friday, I will be teaching Calico Cottages at a workshop for the Golden Valley Guild. This is my final event for the year, then I'm free to get ready for the Holidays!

I'll be back home at the cabin on Saturday night, enjoying a glass of wine and celebrating a successful and very busy year for Sew'n Wild Oaks.  

Hopefully some of you will be able to attend one of the events.

In the Company of Quilters

Hello Everyone,

Another busy week here at Sew'n Wild Oaks while I try to get "caught up".  I don't know when or if that is ever going to happen. 

I started playing with some of the new fabrics I purchased at Country Pines Quilt Shop in Susanville, and this is the result.  Little 5-1/2" Courthouse Step blocks.

In my travels, I hear quilters saying they want to make smaller projects.  This is going to be a small project with small blocks.  Two for the price of one!  But it could also be a larger quilt too.

I started my week speaking at the Pioneer Quilters' Guild in Rocklin, CA.  It was a fantastic group of quilters with hearty laughs.  We had so much fun!  There was one lady in the front row who had me laughing.

Tuesday was my Patchwork Math workshop.  I'm trying to dispel math phobia one quilter at a time.

The girls worked very hard during the day.

When I was clearing out a closet to make room for more fabric.....of course......I found a box of Prairie Flower patterns.  I'm putting them on sale on my SewnWildOaksDesigns Etsy store for $10.00 so I can clear them out of the closet.  I remember very clearly machine quilting each and every little bitty square.......hundreds of them!

If you are interested and don't do Etsy, you can always email me at sewnwildoaks@gmail.com and I can send you a pattern.  The total is $12.66 which includes shipping.  Tax would be added if you live in California.  I love having this quilt on the bed at the cabin.  It is 93" x 93" which is perfect for a queen bed.

As I travel around to quilt guilds, I realize just how lucky I am to be in the company of quilters.  We laugh, we eat, we quilt.  What could be better???

Napa Valley Quilters Guild

Hello Everyone,

 

Gail and I had the privilege of spending two days with the Napa Valley Quilters Guild in Napa, California.  It was a beautiful, Spring-like weekend in a gorgeous area of our state.

 

 

We gathered in the local community center for the meeting and lecture on Saturday.  The room was full and every chair was filled.

After the meeting, it was time for my "quilty" lecture.  They were a great group and laughed heartily in all of the right places.

This is a picture of their opportunity quilt for next year.  Stunning!

On Sunday, I taught my Patchwork Math workshop in this beautiful, well-lit room.  The girls had lots of space and were able to spread their quilting tools and fabrics out across the tables.

 

 

Here I am with my document camera which projects behind me so everyone in the room can see what I'm demonstrating.

This is what happens during a Patchwork Math class. I present a new component and formula about every hour on the hour for around ten minutes.  Then the quilters go off to their workstations and make the component.  The first component and formula that I teach is how to make Half Square Triangles 8 at a time.  Then we move on to Square in a Square, Y-Squares, Flying Geese, Double Flying Geese and finish with 3-color Quarter Square Triangles.  It is a full day and the girls keep busy!  This group was very busy and highly productive......and down right fun to be with! 

 

They really liked "stumping the chump", that would be me!  I think they are going to take Patchwork Math to a whole new level.  You girls were great and made Gail and me feel so welcome.  Thank you ALL so much.

Return from the Lost Coast

Hello Everyone,

 

I'm trying to return to normal after our trip up the Northern California coast last week for a guild lecture and workshop with the Eel River Valley Quilt Guild in Fortuna, CA.  We came home on Saturday, then had a house full of little boys for our grandson's 8th birthday pool party.  Busy times!

 

 

Let me start by saying what a wonderful time we had with all of the quilters!  They were so welcoming to us, and darn good quilters too!  The Chamber of Commerce rolled out the best weather you could wish for too! 

 

Here are a few pictures from the Patchwork Math workshop.

 



Excellent use of Y-squares for a border or sashing.

 

 Quarter square triangles also make wonderful sashings and borders.

 

Here I am presenting the material to the class using my document camera which projects the material over my shoulder.  It's a great tool so everyone can see what I'm talking about.

My sister Gail and my cousin Melody were part of my "entourage".  I can't do a lecture by myself.  There is so much set up from the computer, and projector to the quilts on their stands.  Gail and Melody "womaned" the pattern sales table and they were also my "Vannas" while I spoke about my quilts.

 

Just a couple more pictures of the gorgeous area.  The morning of the lecture, Mr. Joe and I drove through The Avenue of the Giants.  It is 32 miles of cool, green, redwood forests. Breathtaking.

 



We went back to Ferndale for dinner Friday evening.  I'm in love with that little community. The Victorian homes are quite the eye candy.

 



 

 On the way home, we stopped at the historic Benbow Inn for brunch.

We had a wonderful time in the northern part of the state.  So much to see, so much to do, and so many wonderful people.  I'm looking forward to a return trip!
