Baskets, Baskets and More Baskets

Hello Everyone,

I've made my setting decision....and I'll share it with you now.  No matter how hard I tried to line up all of the seams when I sewed the baskets together.....it wasn't working. So, to solve the problem, I put a one-inch (1/2" finished) spacer bar between the baskets.  Works like a charm and gives me more space to quilt little pebbles or whirligigs.

This rich, blue fabric is from a Windham line called History Repeated. I'm using it for the setting triangles and borders.  I'll probably put a thin gold inner strip between the triangles and border. Since the border is directional, I'm going to have to pay attention!

Half of the baskets are now together in 9" blocks.  I have a few more baskets to make before I can start putting all of the rows together. The baskets remind me of a new box full of crayons.  I mentioned that to Mr. Joe, and he said I should name the quilt Crayola Payola. That's not going to happen!  I looked at the Crayola website and I was amazed at all the information it contained.  I wanted to name the quilt from a retired color, but Blizzard Blue, retired in 2003, doesn't do anything for me.  What do you think of Bittersweet Baskets?  There is a crayon color called Bittersweet.  Who knew?

I've been doodling on some Press'n Seal as I think about what I want to quilt in the setting squares.  This is the only doodling that is blogworthy.  The rest are in the trash can.  I have to doodle to get the hands linked to the brain so I can transfer my idea to the long arm.  If I can't draw it, I can't quilt it.  I'll use rulers to make the baskets and the rest will be free motion quilting.

If anyone comes up with a brilliant name for the quilt, please pass it on to me.  I'm open for suggestions, and I'll entertain any of your thoughts, except for Crayola Payola!  I'm sure I can come up with a nice prize for the winner......some plaid fat quarters come to mind.

Soon,
Lynn

  1. This is turning into a fabulous quilt. And I love your idea of the spacer bars. Nothing like coming up with an easy solution to a tricky problem. Perhaps you could name the quilt Whirligig Baskets.

  3. I love the Crayola site and funny how you use that, too. The Windh am line is gorgeous. Blizzard and Bittersweet don't rock my boat, but nothing clever comes to mind.

  6. It is so pretty! Where do you buy your longarm supplies? I want to get some rulers for doing straight lines. If you have a program on your longarm why not do some sort of a basket in those spaces? Maybe something simple. Me, I haven't begun quilting yet. I just practice. Please share puctures Lynn of your quilting and how about a video? I would love it.

  8. Darn - I wanted to side with Mr. Joe, but in the alternative, I think Bittersweet Baskets is perfect, Lynn! Isn't it funny how you can totally change a quilt by just a teeny bit of fabric?! That's what I love about what we do!
    Cheers!

  9. The spacer bar is a perfect solution to the seams not lining up just right. When I looked at them the baskets seemed to have flames so what about Flaming Baskets or Baskets Afire? No matter what you call it, this quilt is gorgeous!

  13. This quilt is going to be gorgeous. I must remember to use your idea of a narrow spacer when I run into a quilt with many seams that just do not fit together. I wish I could think of a name for your Quilt that would do it justice. I cannot wait to see the finished one.

  17. Gorgeous as always! Bittersweet is one of my most used crayons, having been used to blush the cheeks and breathe life into many a muslin dolls face.
Bittersweet is also the name of the sweet little bear that was her bedtime companion for at least a year beginning the day she was born.

  19. Love the blue with the baskets. Looks very Civil War. If you use the gold it will be even more so. How about the name Civil Baskets? With the baskets grouped as they are, maybe the name Regimental Baskets. The feather design is remarkable; like an officers' insignia. Maybe the name General Basket.
